Metal dichalcogenides have the formula ME2, where M is a transition metal and E is S, Se, or Te. As usual, sulphides are the most important members. They have always been dark diamagnetic solids that are insoluble in all solvents and possess semiconducting properties. In terms of electronic structures, these compounds are typically regarded as M4+ derivatives, where M4+ = Ti4+ (d0 configuration), V4+ (d1 configuration), and Mo4+ (d2 configuration).
