Self-Healing Hydrogels

Self-healing hydrogels are a subset of polymer hydrogels. A hydrogel is a macromolecular polymer gel made up of crosslinked polymer chains. Hydrogels are created by chain or step growth of hydrophilic monomers, as well as the addition of a functional crosslinker to promote network formation. The hydrogel's ability to absorb large amounts of water via hydrogen bonding is enhanced by a net-like structure and void imperfections. As a result, hydrogels, both self-healing and non-healing, develop distinctive firm yet elastic mechanical properties. Self-healing refers to the spontaneous formation of new bonds within a material when old bonds are broken.
