Semiconductor Lasers and LEDs

Semiconductor lasers, also known as laser diodes, are one of the most important types of lasers in use today. They are essential for optical communications and control applications, and they are widely used as pump sources for solid-state and fibre lasers.
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), like laser diodes, produce radiation by injecting an electrical current into a junction. LED light is produced by spontaneous emission, whereas laser diode light is produced by stimulated emission. As a result, LEDs typically have lower output powers and emit omnidirectionally.
Semiconductor lasers and LEDs are both electroluminescent semiconductor light sources that result from the radiative recombination of electrons and holes in a semiconductor.
